Keysigning Party, Web Of Trust, PGP? What’s that all about?

by The_Code on Sep.01, 2011, under openSUSE

As announced in my previous post there will again be a keysigning party at the openSUSE conference 2011. As time flies by and I have yet only received very few keys, I thought it might be a good idea to talk a little bit about what this whole thing is about and why you should participate.

Keysigning Party at openSUSE Conference 2011

by The_Code on Aug.24, 2011, under Events, openSUSE

Just like at last years conference, this years openSUSE conference will also feature a keysigning party, read on to find out how to participate and what to do.

What is a Keysigning Party (KSP)
A key signing party is a get-together of people who use the PGP encryption system with the purpose of allowing those people to sign each others keys. Key signing parties serve to extend the web of trust to a great degree. Key signing parties also serve as great opportunities to discuss the political and social issues surrounding strong cryptography, individual liberties, individual sovereignty, and even implementing encryption technologies or perhaps future work on free encryption software.

More info and detailed instructions on key creation, signing and Keysigning party can be found here.

To take part at the Keysigning Party you need to send a signed mail containing your keys fingerprint (the output of gpg –fingerprint $YOUR_KEY_ID) to
keysigning{at]luckylemon{dot}de
Note: Unsigned messages will be ignored!

How to join the party?

And don’t forget to upload your key to a keyserver so others can find it! For example: hkp://pgp.mit.edu:11371 or ldap://keyserver.pgp.com

More info on key generation and uploading can be found here.

What is the deadline for key submission?
To give everybody the chance to bring his printout the deadline for key submission is: Friday September, 9 at 12:00 UTC

The finished keylist should be available at Friday September, 9 at 22:00 UTC

Where will the party take place?
The party will be part of the openSUSE Conference and will take place at the conference venue, Sunday September 11th at 6 PM.

More at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Conference_KSP

And before I forget about it, there will also be the chance to get a CACert assurance! More about that tomorrow or here.

800 DVDs left in Chemnitz :-)

by The_Code on Mar.15, 2010, under Events, openSUSE

This weekend, as mentioned in my previous post, I visited the Chemnitzer Linux Days to run the openSUSE booth! It was my first visit to Chemnitzer Linux Days and I really have to say I was impressed, not only by the amount of visitors but also by the organization, everything worked flawlessly, this also had a major downside the catering was very good ;) Of course our booth was also running flawlessly because of the help from Petr, from the openSUSE Boosters team, and Kai-Uwe, he is developing color management applications, a big thank you to both of you for your support.

So what was happening with openSUSE at CLT? First of all I can announce one impressive number: 800 DVDs ! We distributed 800 DVDs and we forced nobody to take one ;) This gives a good impression on how much people were there and I have to thank Henne for more or less forcing me to take 400 more to Chemnitz, without them we would have run out of DVDs on the first day :(

Besides all the DVDs we distributed, we also had a lot of very interesting discussions and received a lot of good feedback for openSUSE 11.2. An impressive fact that got my attention was the big amount of openSUSE installation that could be found, not only the two we had at our booth but also at other booths!

So I really enjoyed the trip to Chemnitz and I am looking forward to going there next year!

Summary of openSUSE @ FrOSCon 2009

by The_Code on Aug.27, 2009, under Events, openSUSE

Last weekend the FrOSCon took place in Sankt Augustin and again this year openSUSE was present with a booth! For the first time in germany the booth was driven only by Ambassadors and users, AFAIK. So for this reason the event already was a huge success for openSUSE!

The new layout of the fair was much better this year, everything was on one level. Especially on Saturday afternoon there were a lot of people visiting and we were able to have good conversations and spread a lot of openSUSE DVDs.

The most exciting thing that happened was a blind visitor coming to our booth, he told us that our grub during installation was able to talk! We couldn’t believe it and no one ever heard of this feature, but it is true the openSUSE installation grub is able to talk, press F9 and it will begin reading the current selection. Unfortunately this is not visible in grub, feature request in openFATE is here.

You can find pictures of our booth and the event here.

Up next openSUSE conference in Nuremberg, looking forward to this great event!

Back from LinuxTag 2009

by The_Code on Jun.29, 2009, under Easy-LTSP, Events, openSUSE, openSUSE Education

It was great to be at LinuxTag, it was the first time I have been to LinuxTag in fact!

So here is what happened to me at LinuxTag:

On Thursday I had an interview with Radio Tux about openSUSE Education, which is not published yet.

On Saturday henne and I got interviewed by linux-club.de henne talked about SUSE-Studio and i gave some facts about openSUSE Education, you can listen to it here (German).

On Saturday we also had openSUSE day at LinuxTag and i had the opportunity of talking about Easy-LTSP (in English), a video of my talk and the slides will be available soon in the openSUSE wiki. And according to AJ it must be worth watching it :)

Beside these “major” things i had a lot of talks with teachers who want to use openSUSE in there schools and it was really great to show them how easy openSUSE Education Li-f-e is.

And of course it was great to meet all the people at the openSUSE booth and nubae!

Thanks to all who have visited us and to all who made it possible to present openSUSE and openSUSE Education in the way we could!

Be sure to checkout Adrian’s pictures, you can see our cool openSUSE Education shirts on some.

Announcing Easy-KIWI-GUI

by The_Code on Nov.03, 2008, under Easy-KIWI, Easy-KIWI-GUI, openSUSE

Almost two months have past since my last post. So here i am again!

Cyberorg introduced easy-kiwi-build, a command line tool to create KIWI images. He also announced that i will do a little GUI for it and here it is, finally ;)

It is not yet feature complete, but can help you with the basic configuration for easy-kiwi-build.

As a little screen says more:

You can get it via 1-click.

I am also currently working on some bugfixes for Easy-LTSP and as this is the second time i have to parse a file in /etc/sysconfig i am also working on a Mono library for parsing and manipulating those files.
